Instructional Design
Instructional design, also known as instructional systems design, is the analysis of learning needs and systematic development of instruction. Instructional designers often use instructional technology as a method for developing instruction. Instructional design models typically specify a method, that if followed will facilitate the transfer of knowledge, skills and attitude to the recipient or acquirer of the instruction.

Riptide Software, Inc. uses an approved instructional systems design process in the development of interactive multimedia instruction (IMI), or web-based training.

I. Analysis Phase

  1. Identify essential job tasks
  2. Identify learning objectives
  3. Information on learner population

II. Design Phase

  1. Selection of instructional method
  2. Selection of content and media
  3. Determine the instructional strategies
  4. Review the current instructional method

III. Development Phase

  1. Development of lesson materials, module practice interactions
  2. Assessments
  3. Media production (digital video, 3d animation, audio, digital photographs, etc.)

IV. Implementation Phase

  1. Validation activities of formative and summative evaluation
  2. Delivery

Following the ISD process ensures that Riptide provides our customers with sanctioned and approved IMI, benefiting the student going through the training.

Learning Management Systems
A Learning Management System (or LMS) is a software package that enables the management and delivery of learning content and resources to students, and records learner activities and progress. Most LMS systems are web-based to facilitate "anytime, anywhere" access to learning content and administration.

At a minimum, the LMS usually allows for student registration, delivery and tracking of e-learning courses and content, and student testing. It may also allow for the management of instructor-led training classes. In the most comprehensive LMS, one may find tools such as competency management, skills-gap analysis, succession planning, certifications, virtual live classes, and resource allocation (venues, rooms, textbooks, instructors, etc.). Most systems allow for learner self-service, facilitating self-enrollment and access to courses.

Riptide has growing experience in the use, development, and tailoring of learning management systems. Under contracts for the U. S. Army, we have developed a web-based portal, Learning Management System, and interactive training content. The portal and content are built in Flash, providing a rich graphical and interactive experience available through most modern browsers. The award-winning site and content employ consistent branding and user-oriented design, solid instructional-design principles, and rich Flash and multimedia assets that support performance-based training and evaluation. They integrate with 3D video-game scenarios that help reinforce the training and test learner understanding and performance.

The LMS and content adhere to the latest Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) standards, promoting extensibility and hosting flexibility. The LMS uses the open-source, SCORM Run-Time Environment reference implementation produced by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative. Future efforts involve integrating Army Knowledge Online (AKO) single sign-on capabilities and hosting content on the Army Learning Management System (ALMS).
