In 2001, The Carnegie Mellon® Software Engineering Institute (SEI) developed and published the Capability Maturity Model for Integration (CMMI®).The CMMI® is a model for improving and  appraising the performance of development organizations. The CMMI (the original version of the CMMI® was originally commissioned by the Department of Defense to help them qualify software vendors' capabilities.There are five maturity levels of assessment within the CMMI® model.
